Navigating the Postpartum Experience

The postpartum period is a time of immense change. It’s often described as a beautiful, love-filled time, but for many new parents, it can also bring exhaustion, self-doubt, anxiety, and overwhelming emotions. The physical recovery from birth, sleep deprivation, and the responsibility of caring for a newborn can make it difficult to feel like yourself. Many parents experience shifts in mood, difficulty bonding with their baby, feelings of guilt or inadequacy, and moments of emotional overwhelm.

Postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are more common than many realize, affecting up to 1 in 5 new parents. Symptoms can include persistent sadness, irritability, excessive worry, racing thoughts, feelings of detachment, or even distressing intrusive thoughts about harm coming to the baby. These experiences can be deeply unsettling, but they are not a reflection of your ability to parent, and they do not mean you are alone.
