Truth & Reconciliation

Taking Action

At Lumos Psychological, we firmly stand by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action, particularly those related to health and mental health services. These calls  are a roadmap for addressing the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous  peoples and provide actionable steps for reconciliation. In honour of Truth and Reconciliation , we are expanding on our commitments to these vital calls to action, ensuring they are  deeply embedded in our clinic’s operations and services.

Here’s how we are specifically aligning with the TRC’s Calls to Action related to mental health  (Calls 19-24) and health (Calls 18-23):

 18

Call to Action #18: Acknowledging the Role of Indigenous Knowledge in Health. We commit to recognizing and supporting the role of Indigenous knowledge systems in health  care. Our practice will incorporate this wisdom into the ways we approach mental health care,  respecting the traditional values, ceremonies, and cultural practices that contribute to the well being of Indigenous individuals and communities.

 19

Call to Action #19: Addressing Disparities in Health Outcomes. We commit to working with Indigenous communities to address the stark health and mental  health disparities they face, such as higher rates of trauma, depression, substance use  disorders, and suicide. At Lumos Psychological, we commit to better understanding these  disparities and advocate for targeted funding and policy changes that improve access to care.  Our goal is to actively reduce these gaps through culturally appropriate, trauma-informed  services.

20

Call to Action #20: Equitable Health Funding. Lumos Psychological will advocate for the equitable distribution of health care funding,  ensuring that Indigenous peoples receive the necessary resources to address their unique  mental health needs. We will support initiatives that aim to secure long-term, sustainable  funding for Indigenous-led health services and will work collaboratively with local and national  organizations to amplify these demands.

21

Call to Action #21: Recognizing and Addressing the Impact of Residential Schools on Mental Health.
We acknowledge the deep psychological harm caused by the residential school system, which  has led to intergenerational trauma in Indigenous communities. At Lumos Psychological, we  are committed to addressing these effects in our therapy and outreach services by providing  trauma-informed, culturally sensitive mental health care. We will also participate in continuing  education about residential school trauma, helping to foster greater understanding and healing.

22

Call to Action #22: Ensuring the Inclusion of Indigenous Healing Practices. Lumos Psychological will work to integrate Indigenous healing practices and knowledge into  our clinical offerings. This includes collaborating with traditional healers, Elders, and  Indigenous mental health professionals to offer a blend of Western and Indigenous  approaches. We will also ensure that Indigenous clients have the option to incorporate their  cultural healing practices within their care plans, empowering them to engage with their mental  health in ways that honour their traditions.

23

Call to Action #23: Cultural Competency Training for Health Care Professionals. All clinicians and staff at Lumos Psychological will undergo mandatory cultural competency  training to better understand the histories, cultures, and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples. This training will be an ongoing process, ensuring that our team remains current on  Indigenous issues, including the legacy of colonialism and the specific needs of Indigenous  clients. We are dedicated to building a clinic environment that is safe, welcoming, and  respectful of Indigenous worldviews and healing approaches.
